A huge portrait of Mao Zedong in oil placed high outside the Forbidden City of Beijing draws my attention on a hot day of Aug. 2. The portrait occupies the central position in the visual path of Tiananmen Square. But to several young people with me, the portrait has only a metaphorical meaning. The huge space and the buildings around are their visual fêtes. To me the entire square resonates with the portrait of the chairman and the political events of the China in the second half of the 20th century. I feel I am struggling with a cumulative force created in my mind by a sudden combination of the epistemology associated with the Chinese communist history, the halo created around the space, the world-shaking events that emanated from this political location and my own romantic dreams of revolution and change as a youth from an eastern village of Nepal.

Owing to the culture of 'extension', Nepal continues to be the victim of political sluggishness. Along with the ethics of refraining from commitment another culture that Nepalese political parties have assimilated is the culture of 'postponement'. The political leaders have not only failed to fulfill their party's ideological commitment but also their own commitment.
The High Level Task Force that was given birth with the Herculean mission of sorting out all contentious issues within various reports of the Thematic Committees has also failed to fulfill its assignment till today. What is more important here is that the Task Force never seemed to be serious about its deadline. It never strived to meet it. Why? The answer is simple. For politicians who have battled the Prime Ministerial run off for 13 times and who have extended the term of UNMIN for 8 times have assimilated the culture of postponement. They are accustomed to stick to their own speed giving a damn to demand of the task.

In Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, human life is referred to as precious because it has special powers of accomplishment. One comes across three things in the context of human life: body, enjoyments and virtuous roots. We offer these to Buddha, Dharma and Sangha in the mandala-offering practice. We are also expected to dedicate these to the well-being of sentient and non-sentient beings.
The body refers not only to the biological body but to the whole psycho-physical existence of human life. As humans we have the capacity for both positive and negative forms, just as technology could be used for either positive or negative purposes.

Archana walked right into the hall where the awards, named after the nine goddesses of the Hindu pantheon, were being awarded to nine exceptional women who have made a positive impact to society. I stopped to talk to a number of my friends who were milling around the lobby, mostly men from the fields of film, theatre, arts, literature, media and education. It was heartening to see so many men attending the function, and I remembered a remark, made by another male friend three years ago when I was about to leave for an earlier version of the Navadevi awards. “Why should we men attend an event that is organized by women for awarding other women?” the friend had asked, “Especially when most of these women are feminists and hate men like us.”
