GOVT REQUESTS UN FOR EXTENDING UNMIN TERM BY FOUR MONTHS
September 08 2010
KATHMANDU
After a long criticism and debate among the political parties on the role of UNMIN and extension of its tenure, the government finally requested United Nations to extend UNMIN's term for four months. A letter requesting same is dispatched by the government to UN headquarters today.
Earlier UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon had said that debating mandate and term extension was not appropriate. In Nepal, Nepali Congress, Nepal Army and the Prime Minister himself were in favor of curtailing mandate of UNMIN while the UCPN Maoists and the institutional side of CPN UML have been in favor of retaining the earlier mandate of UN agency.
