Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid Ul-Fitr, the last day of the Islamic festival of Ramadan today. Ramadan began 30 days ago, on August 11. The festival marks the ending of the one month long fasting called roja. During roja Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and personal relations from dawn until sunset. The fast is taken for a month with a belief that the fasting makes one closer to God and the time is taken to offer more prayers than usual.
Eid celebrations are marked by fervent preparations within Muslim communities. Families decorate their homes, and gifts are bought to distribute to friends and family, sweets and other delicacies are prepared, and new clothing is bought to celebrate the occasion. However, before the social celebrations, the day begins with prayer.
